Rank and Gala fight it out over G trademark

Rank and Gala, the UKs two major bingo operators, have locked horns in a legal battle over a trademark.
Rank has launched a new range of casinos named G, formerly known as Grosvenor Casinos.
|
They attempted to register the G as a trademark, but came up against rivals Gala bingo, who claim to have previously registered the same trademark.
Rank Group owns Mecca Bingo and 32 gambling venues across Britain, and has been running bingo games for 45 years. Gala runs 30 casinos countrywide and a large number of bingo halls.
Conditions are tough in the UK bingo industry, what with last year's smoking ban causing numbers to take a dive, and with double taxation pushing many bingo halls to the brink of bankruptcy. The bingo industry was hoping for a reprieve in this years budget, but the Chancellor did not make the desired changes.
Rank and Gala seem unlikely to find a compromise, and remain stark opponents.
Gala and Rank have both embraced online bingo, Gala with their galabingo.co.uk site currently fronted by Sharon Osbourne, and Rank's Mecca Bingo site offers super online prizes in addition to highlighting their land-based venues.
